Atheism 12. Freewill |
Creationists seem to have created a paradox in their thinking
with regard to freewill. On the one
hand they say humans were given freewill by God and yet on the other hand
they seem to think we live in a Newtonian Universe which creates
Paley-esque clockwork creatures - indeed
the sheer idea of bodies being compared with mechanisms like watches seems
to show they entirely misunderstand the implications of modern physics and
mathematics to the philosophical discussions of how free thought takes
place. The creationist idea is confused - it seeks to say that we are a product of a designer and that that we are designed mechanisms and yet we have freewill. By comparison, the scientific explanations make a lot more sense - we have evolved complexity and because of Quantum Theory and Chaos Theory the mind is free to act out in new ways and was not designed but gives the appearance of design because it has been honed over years of evolution. In order for us to have freewill we cannot live in a Newtonian clockwork universe -neither can our bodies be designed Payley-esque watch-like mechanisms - the fact is that science shows us how we can both appear designed and how we can have freewill. If creationists were to take a close look at their illogical views - they would be forced to conclude that they cannot have it both ways - either we were designed and are mechanisms in a mechanistic universe who are fooled into thinking we have free thought - or we truly do have freewill because we are not designed. If we consider the theological and philosophical implications of Chaos,we find that many of the staple ideas of creationism have been upset by modern mathematical and physical notions We have freewill because the universe itself relies on a basic freedom - and our brains make use of this basic freedom - all of this is done without recourse to a designer. Creationists are still stuck with basic cause and effect issues because they do not understand modern physics and mathematics and thus end up with illogical arguments. My experience has been that creationists do not know enough about cellular biology, emergent systems, neurology, quantum physics, cosmology, mathematics -science to be able to say how this universe began, continues and how we have freewill within it.Neither do they seem to understand the provision that chemical substances have for self assembly. |
